Deep Winter • Quiet Renewal • The Returning Light

July settles into the heart of deep winter here in lutruwita Tasmania. The Winter Solstice has passed, yet its medicine continues to echo across the landscape. The days lengthen by only moments, almost imperceptibly, while frost settles across paddocks, mist lingers in the valleys, and ancient forests hold their quiet wisdom beneath bare branches.

The land is no longer descending. It is resting.

Beneath the surface, life is already preparing for spring, though little of it can yet be seen. Seeds remain hidden. Roots continue their unseen work. The earth reminds us that transformation rarely begins where the eye can witness it.

July is a month of quiet resilience.

Rather than asking us to retreat further inward, it gently invites us to emerge with intention. Not through urgency or striving, but through trust. The returning light is subtle, encouraging us to notice the smallest signs of renewal. An earlier sunrise. The call of a bird before dawn. A bud beginning to swell on a dormant branch.

This is a month for tending what has been quietly growing beneath the surface.

The Energetic Shift

The first three weeks of July remain immersed in Cancer season.

Cancer turns our awareness toward home, ancestry, emotional nourishment, belonging and the wisdom of the heart. Winter naturally draws us inward, and Cancer reminds us that true resilience is cultivated through softness as much as strength. The body asks for warmth, the nervous system seeks restoration, and the spirit longs for places where it feels safe enough to simply be.

This is a beautiful time for tending family relationships, creating nourishing rituals, honouring your ancestors, slowing your pace, and deepening your connection with the places and people that truly sustain you.

On 23 July, the Sun moves into Leo and something quietly begins to awaken.

Leo rekindles the inner fire that has been carefully protected throughout winter. Creativity stirs. Confidence gently returns. Joy begins to emerge from beneath the stillness. This is not the expansive energy of summer, but the first glowing ember beneath winter's ashes.

The question July asks is simple.

What part of you is ready to come alive again?

Herbal Medicine of Deep Winter

As winter settles more deeply across the landscape, July invites us to shift our focus from simply enduring the season to gently rebuilding vitality. The returning light may still be subtle, but the body begins preparing for the transition ahead, making this an ideal time to nourish the immune system, support the lungs, strengthen digestion and replenish the nervous system after the darker months.

Elecampane (Inula helenium) is one of my favourite herbs during deep winter, offering traditional support for the respiratory system while bringing warmth and movement to lingering congestion. It has a long history of use for persistent winter coughs and reminds us that breath itself can become a source of renewal.

Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) provides beautiful restorative support for those feeling depleted or run down. Sweet, moistening and nourishing, it soothes irritated mucous membranes, supports adrenal function and works harmoniously alongside many other winter herbs. (Avoid in cases of uncontrolled hypertension.)

Calendula (Calendula officinalis) may be known for its vibrant summer flowers, but as a herbal medicine it continues to offer gentle support through winter by encouraging lymphatic circulation, healthy immune function and tissue repair. Its bright golden petals feel like a quiet reminder that the returning light is already present, even in the coldest months.

Marshmallow Root (Althaea officinalis) brings soothing, moistening medicine to the respiratory and digestive systems, particularly when winter's cold air leaves tissues feeling dry or irritated. Its gentle demulcent qualities make it a beautiful ally throughout the season.

Hawthorn (Crataegus spp.) offers quiet support for both the physical and emotional heart. During a season that naturally encourages reflection and slowing down, Hawthorn reminds us to cultivate resilience through steadiness, nourishing the cardiovascular system while gently supporting the emotional landscape.

To keep warmth circulating through the body, I continue reaching for Cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum), whose aromatic sweetness encourages healthy digestion, improves peripheral circulation and brings a comforting sense of vitality to winter teas, broths and herbal blends.

Rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus) also remains close at hand, sharpening mental clarity, stimulating circulation and lifting the heaviness that can sometimes accompany the darker months.

Nervous System and Emotional Landscape

Deep winter has a way of revealing what busyness often conceals.

As the world becomes quieter, the inner landscape becomes easier to hear.

July may bring moments of reflection, emotional honesty, remembrance and gentle insight. Not because something is wrong, but because stillness creates space for truth.

This month asks us not to fix every emotion, but to sit beside it with compassion.

Milky Oats (Avena sativa) continue rebuilding depleted nervous systems through deep nourishment. Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) softens anxious thoughts while gently uplifting the spirit. Rose (Rosa spp.) encourages the heart to remain open after disappointment or grief, while Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) eases tension held within both the digestive and nervous systems. Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) offers wonderful support when mental fatigue and overstimulation linger beneath the surface.

Crystal allies including Moonstone, Rose Quartz, Lepidolite, Kunzite and Prehnite encourage emotional softness without overwhelm, reminding us that healing rarely arrives through force.

Nutrition and Seasonal Grounding

July reminds us that warmth itself is medicine.

Slow cooked meals, nourishing broths, roasted root vegetables, medicinal mushrooms, warming spices, oats, healthy fats and mineral rich soups continue to support the body's increased demands throughout winter.

This is the season to slow down around food.

Prepare meals with intention.

Share them with people you love.

Allow nourishment to become ritual rather than routine.

The kitchen becomes both apothecary and sanctuary.

Energetic Themes of July

If June asked,

What is sustaining me?

July gently asks,

What within me is beginning to awaken?

Not through force.

Not through urgency.

But through quiet devotion to what feels genuinely alive.

This month favours consistency over intensity.

Presence over productivity.

Authenticity over perfection.

The returning light is teaching us that even the smallest movement toward life matters.
